Product Overview
This medication is a synthetic antiandrogen, prescribed for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), prostate cancer, and hair loss. It prevents testosterone conversion in to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the body.Finasteride is a 5α-reductase inhibitor and therefore an antiandrogen.[9] It works by decreasing the production of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) by about 70%, including in the prostate gland and the scalp.
Uses
. Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH): Finasteride is prescribed to help reduce the size of the prostate gland in men with BPH. By inhibiting the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), it can relieve urinary symptoms associated with an enlarged prostate.
2. Prostate Cancer: In some cases, finasteride may be used as part of the treatment plan for prostate cancer, particularly in certain types of the disease.
3. Hair Loss (Androgenetic Alopecia): Finasteride is also used to treat male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia) by slowing hair loss and, in some cases, promoting hair regrowth.
Benefits
. Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH):
- Reduction in Prostate Size: Finasteride can help reduce the size of the prostate gland in men with BPH. This can relieve urinary symptoms such as difficulty urinating, weak urine flow, frequent urination, and the sensation of incomplete emptying of the bladder.
- Improved Urinary Flow: By reducing prostate size, finasteride can improve urinary flow and decrease the risk of urinary retention.
Side Effect
- Sexual Dysfunction: One of the most commonly reported side effects is sexual dysfunction. This may include a decrease in libido (sex drive), difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection (erectile dysfunction), and changes in ejaculation (such as reduced semen volume or retrograde ejaculation). These side effects may persist even after discontinuing the medication in some cases.
- Breast Tenderness or Enlargement: Some men may experience breast tenderness or enlargement (gynecomastia) while taking finasteride.
- Dizziness or Weakness: These symptoms can occur in some individuals, especially when standing up quickly.
- Depression: There have been reports of depression and changes in mood in a small number of individuals taking finasteride.
- Testicular Pain: Some men may experience testicular pain or discomfort.
How to use
Swallow the tablets whole. Do not crush or break them, as this may affect the medication's effectiveness.
How It works
Inhibition of 5-Alpha-Reductase:
- Finasteride is a 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor. It specifically inhibits the type II isoform of the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase, which is primarily found in the prostate gland and the scalp.By inhibiting this enzyme, finasteride reduces the conversion of testosterone into DHT.
